Tatcha swapped the silicone base of its cult primer for a water-based one. No announcement. No fanfare. Just a quiet bottle change that has loyalists losing their minds.
The old version sat on skin like silk chiffon — the new one sinks in like a serum. That’s the whole divide in one sentence.
$52 for 1.01 oz. Claims to be a “protective primer & hydrating serum” hybrid. I bought it because the original was the only thing that made my giant pores look like a filter.
New water-first base
Gone is the dimethicone-heavy slip. This dries down tacky, not velvety.
Same dropper situation
Still that glass pipette. Still messy. Still wastes product on the threads.
SPF-free (still)
No sun protection. For a “protective” primer, that’s a choice.

They swapped dimethicone for squalane and glycerin — smart for dry skin, dumb if you wanted that insta-blur. The hero is still Japanese wild rose, but it’s doing less heavy lifting now.
- Squalane: Soaks in fast, zero residue
- Glycerin: The real MVP for hydration
- Wild Rose: Pore-firming claim, subtle at best
- Alcohol: Yep, it’s in there. Denat. — watch out if you’re sensitive

First pump: runny. Like a thin lotion. It spreads in 3 seconds flat and disappears into skin — no trace of that silicone slip. Freaked me out honestly.
Week two: I realized it’s not a blur primer anymore. It’s a grip primer. Foundation stuck longer, but my pores looked like pores. Not a trade I love.

My makeup lasted 2 hours longer. My skin didn’t feel tight. But my nose pores? Same as before. The “blur” is now a “soften” — real difference.

Better for hydration, worse for blur. If you wanted a primer that actually primes — the old one wins. If your skin is thirsty — this is your new best friend.
