Every derm on TikTok swears by CeraVe, so I grabbed this retinol serum to see if it actually smooths texture or just sits there looking medical.
Spoiler: it’s not magic, but it’s the first retinol that didn’t make my chin peel like a snake while still doing work.
It’s $19 at Target. A creamy gel that promises to refine pores and smooth bumps without the angry red reaction. Claims it’s gentle enough for newbies.
Encapsulated Retinol
Slow-release so it doesn’t hit your face like a wrecking ball at 2am
Licorice Root Extract
Fades dark spots while the retinol works — smart combo
Ceramides
The barrier-savers that make this tolerable for sensitive skin

Hero is encapsulated retinol at a low dose — 0.3%ish. It’s not the strongest, but that’s the point. Licorice root brightens, niacinamide calms redness, and ceramides stop the peeling circus.
- Encapsulated Retinol (0.3%): Slow-release, less irritation, works over time
- Licorice Root Extract: Fades post-acne marks without bleaching
- Niacinamide: Shrinks pore appearance while soothing
- Ceramides NP, AP, EOP: Triple barrier support so you don’t look like a lizard

Texture is a lightweight cream-gel hybrid — sinks in 10 seconds flat. No greasy film, no pilling under moisturizer. Smells like nothing, which I respect.
Week 3: my forehead texture got noticeably smoother, but my nose pores still look like they’re throwing a party. Unexpected win — the dark spots on my chin faded faster than the texture improved.

Texture improved about 60% — enough that makeup sits better. Pores looked smaller, but only when I didn’t stare too hard. Dark spots? Actually faded noticeably.

This won’t transform your skin overnight, but it’s the most forgiving retinol I’ve used that still delivers actual results. Texture? Smoother. Irritation? Barely there.
