Argentina’s gauchos have been chewing on this stuff for centuries to survive the pampas — so Pampa went ahead and put it in a face wash. Genius or marketing gimmick? I needed to find out.
Turns out, yerba mate is basically caffeine and antioxidants in leaf form, which sounds a lot like what my skin actually wants at 7am. The brand’s whole identity is built on the gaucho heritage — these guys were the original low-maintenance skincare guys, just with more leather and knives.
It’s a $28 low-foam gel cleanser that barely bubbles — which scared me at first because I’m a sucker for that squeaky-clean feeling. Pampa claims the mate leaf extract gives you “energized skin” which sounds like wellness-bro nonsense, but I was curious enough to try.

The hero is yerba mate extract — a plant with more antioxidants than green tea and a natural caffeine kick that mildly constricts blood vessels, which explains why my face looked less puffy after a salty dinner. It’s paired with glycerin and aloe so your barrier doesn’t hate you.
- Yerba Mate Extract: Caffeine + antioxidants that wake up tired skin and fight free radicals
- Glycerin: Humectant that pulls water in so you don’t feel tight after washing
- Aloe Leaf Juice: Calms redness and gives slip so the gel glides instead of drags
- Cocamidopropyl Betaine: Coconut-derived surfactant that cleanses without the squeaky strip

It’s a translucent gel that feels more like a light lotion than a cleanser — zero foam, just a slippery glide that made me double-check I wasn’t applying moisturizer. Rinses clean in about 15 seconds, no residue, but also no squeak — just soft, quiet skin.
Two weeks in, my redness calmed down more than I expected. I wasn’t tracking it as a “calming” product — I thought it was just a caffeine gimmick — but my cheeks stopped throwing tantrums after my morning wash.

My skin looks less tired in the morning — like I got an extra hour of sleep when I definitely didn’t. The morning puffiness in my eyes is measurably less, and my redness is dialed down maybe 30%, but it’s not a miracle worker for texture or breakouts.

It’s a great morning cleanser that does what it says — wake up your face — without destroying your barrier. Not life-changing, but I’m keeping it in rotation.
