Dermatologists have been telling us for decades that retinoids thin your skin. That’s technically true — and completely misleading. They thin the dead top layer while thickening everything underneath that actually matters.
Bakuchiol brands weaponized this half-truth to sell you $80 serums that do a fraction of the work. I’ve used both. Here’s what I found.
Tretinoin: $30 generic tube, Rx only. The gold standard since the 70s. Bakuchiol: $25-80, plant-derived, no prescription. It’s the “clean beauty” answer to retinol.
Cell turnover speed
Tretinoin forces turnover in 3-5 days. Bakuchiol takes 8-12 weeks to show anything.
Irritation curve
Tretinoin punishes you for 2 weeks straight. Bakuchiol feels like water — no purge, no peeling, barely any payoff.
Barrier proteins
Tretinoin directly stimulates collagen I and III synthesis. Bakuchiol has one study showing it might do something similar. Emphasis on “might.”

Tretinoin is pure retinoic acid — the active form your skin can use immediately. Bakuchiol is a phenol compound that mimics retinol’s pathway, but the research is thin and mostly funded by the companies selling it.
- Tretinoin (0.025-0.1%): Directly binds retinoic acid receptors, triggers collagen production
- Bakuchiol: Plant compound that upregulates some retinoid genes — at 1/10th the potency
- Hyaluronic acid (in both): Water binder that offsets dryness
- Ceramides (in bakuchiol formulas): Support barrier but don’t rebuild collagen

Tretinoin is a matte, stiff cream that feels like drying clay on your face. You’ll know it’s there. Bakuchiol is a silky, fast-absorbing oil that feels like luxury in a bottle.
Week two on tretinoin, my skin peeled around my mouth like a snake. Week two on bakuchiol, nothing happened. Literally nothing — my skin looked the same, felt the same, behaved the same. That’s the problem.

After 12 weeks, tretinoin gave me visible texture improvement, smaller pores, and a glow that survived my terrible sleep schedule. Bakuchiol gave me… soft skin. Nice, but my $15 moisturizer does that.

Bakuchiol isn’t a scam — it’s just a rookie playing in the major leagues. Tretinoin rebuilds your barrier from the inside out. Bakuchiol polishes the surface.
