You bought the giant tub because TikTok told you to, and now you’re staring at a face that feels like a slug. I get it — I’ve been there.
But here’s the thing: CeraVe just quietly changed the formula, and nobody’s talking about it. The texture is different. The finish is different. Your skin knows.
It’s $17 for 16 ounces at Target — basically a car wash bucket of moisturizer. The claim: 24-hour hydration with three essential ceramides. Sounds simple, right?
New Thickening Agent
They swapped in a different polymer — the cream is now stiffer, less whipped. It sits on skin for a full 90 seconds before melting.
Preservative Change
Phenoxyethanol got bumped up. If you’re sensitive to it, your face will tell you within a day.
pH Shift
It’s slightly more acidic now. Good for barrier repair, bad if you just used a strong active.

It’s not fancy. It’s functional. The ceramides are there, but they’re not at the clinical level your derm would prescribe. What actually does the heavy lifting is the petrolatum — yes, the Vaseline ingredient — that seals everything in.
- Ceramides NP/AP/EOP: Rebuild your lipid barrier but at low percentages
- Hyaluronic Acid: Holds 1000x its weight in water, but sits at the bottom of the list
- Petrolatum: The real MVP — occlusive slug life
- Niacinamide: Calms redness, but can sting broken skin

First pump: this is not the old formula. It’s dense, almost like cold butter. Rub it in and it turns white before slowly vanishing — 60 seconds of white cast that makes you look like a ghost who just saw their ex.
Week two: my cheeks stopped flaking. But my T-zone? Oilier than a diner grill. The reformulation made it heavier in the wrong places. I had to switch to only using it at night.

My dry patches on my cheeks? Gone by day five. The flaky nose? Still flaky. The texture is the problem — it sits on top of dead skin instead of softening it away. You’ll need a chemical exfoliant underneath, which defeats the “one-and-done” purpose.

It’s still the best $17 you’ll spend — on your elbows. On your face, it’s a downgrade from the old formula, and I’m not pretending otherwise.
