I threw my $50 prescription gel in a drawer two weeks ago and haven’t looked back. This $6 Equate tube from the Walmart acne aisle is doing what my derm’s fancy formula never could.
It’s not even close. My skin is calmer, smoother, and — weirdest part — less red than when I was on the “medical-grade” stuff.
It’s a 10% benzoyl peroxide gel. Ten percent. The highest strength you can get without a script — for the price of a fast-food meal.
10% Micronized BP
The particles are ground fine enough that it actually sinks in, not just sits there like chalk.

No greasy film. My combo skin doesn’t feel like a glazed donut by noon.

Benzoyl peroxide is the workhorse here — it nukes acne bacteria on contact, which is why it works faster than salicylic acid’s slow exfoliation. The gel base is surprisingly simple, which is the point.
- Benzoyl Peroxide 10%: Kills acne bacteria instantly, peels dead skin
- Glycerin: The only thing stopping this from drying you into a raisin
- Carbomer: Gives it that lightweight gel texture
- Dimethicone: Locks in moisture, keeps the BP from frying your barrier

It’s a classic clear gel — spreads like a thin aloe, dries down in about 90 seconds. No sticky residue, no white cast. It feels like you put on nothing, which freaked me out at first.
Week two hit me sideways: my skin peeled like a snake — but only for three days, and then it was like a filter got turned on. Tiny red marks faded. The angry cystic thing on my jaw just… flattened.
