Did CeraVe just quietly swap the formula on the moisturizer half the internet slathers on before bed? Yeah. They did. No fanfare, no “new look” — just a different texture in the same boring tube.
I compared the old batch (I hoard empties, don’t judge) to the new one side-by-side. The new one feels thinner going on but somehow sits greasier for five full minutes. That’s a specific betrayal I did not see coming.
It’s still $16 for 3 ounces. The claim is the same — “nighttime moisture with niacinamide” — but the vehicle changed. Here’s what I noticed in the first 48 hours.
Texture Shift
It’s now a gel-cream hybrid that spreads like water but leaves a tacky film if you use more than two pumps.
Absorption Speed
Old formula sank in during one TikTok scroll. This one needs a full minute to dry down — an eternity in skincare time.
The Pump
Same pump, but the new formula clogs the nozzle by day three. I had to unscrew the cap and tap it out like ketchup.

The ingredient list got a glow-up on paper. They swapped the old fatty acid blend for something more cosmetically elegant — except elegant isn’t always better for your skin barrier. The niacinamide is still 4%, which is effective but slightly more irritating than the 2% sweet spot if your barrier is already angry.
- Niacinamide: brightens and controls oil but can sting if your skin is compromised
- Ceramides: still the backbone — good for barrier repair
- Hyaluronic Acid: now lower on the list, so less plumping power
- Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride: adds slip but feels heavier on the skin

First pump: it smells like nothing, which is fine. But it sits on my cheeks like a thin layer of plastic wrap for ten minutes. I kept checking the mirror to see if I missed a step.
By week two, my skin adjusted. The tackiness faded by morning, and my forehead looked less oily than usual. But my dry patches — the ones the old formula smoothed overnight — are still flaking at day 14. That’s a regression, plain and simple.

My pores look smaller and my nose isn’t an oil slick by noon. But the hydration level dropped a full notch — I need a heavier cream on top now, which defeats the “one-and-done” purpose of this bottle.

The new formula is a downgrade for dry skin and a sidegrade for oily skin. I’m keeping it in my gym bag for post-shower days, but I’ve already re-ordered the old version from a third-party seller before they run out.
