SunPure’s Mineral Lotion is everywhere. The bottle screams “Reef-Safe!” in big, friendly letters.
But that term is totally unregulated — a marketing free-for-all. The real test is what’s NOT on the ingredient list.
A $28 mineral SPF 50. The claim? “100% reef-friendly, non-nano zinc protection.” I had to see if the formula matched the vibe.
Water Resistance
Lasts 80 minutes, but only if you don’t towel off aggressively.
Scent
Vaguely like unscented play-dough — not offensive, just… there.

Non-nano zinc oxide is the sole active ingredient. That’s the gold standard for reef safety. The base formula, though, is where it gets murky.
- Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride: Coconut-derived emollient — fine.
- Butyloctyl Salicylate: A texture enhancer, not a sunscreen chemical.
- Polyhydroxystearic Acid: Helps disperse the zinc evenly.
- Dimethicone: Silicone for slip — not exactly ‘clean,’ but it works.

Thick. Like, Elmer’s Glue-thick. It takes a full 90 seconds of rubbing to avoid a stark white cast. My arm got a workout.
By week two, I noticed it pills under any moisturizer richer than a serum. You have to apply it to bone-dry skin — a naked face.
