My under-eye area looked like a topographical map of regret. Puffy, lined, tired.
I was about to drop $75 on a fancy cream when I saw this little tube at Target. The price tag was a dare.
It’s a clear retinol gel from Neutrogena‘s Rapid Wrinkle Repair line. $7.99. Claims to depuff and smooth fine lines fast.

It uses retinol SA — a stabilized form that’s gentler. Plus hyaluronic acid. The combo is supposed to smooth lines and plump.
- Retinol SA: A time-release retinol that’s less irritating
- Hyaluronic Acid: Draws in moisture for a temporary plumping effect
- Glycerin: Basic, reliable hydration
- Dimethicone: Silicone that creates a smooth, blurring finish
The gel is shockingly cold. Not a subtle chill — a real “whoa” moment. It has a slight, clean scent that disappears instantly.
By week two, I noticed the puffiness was down. The fine lines? Still there, but softer. The real surprise? My concealer stopped creasing into them by 10 AM.
Puffiness? Gone in 10 minutes. Deep-set genetic dark circles? Unchanged. But the fine lines around the outer corners are definitely less visible — they look blurred, not erased.
It’s not magic, but it’s the best-performing, most satisfying drugstore eye product I’ve used. Saves my face on early mornings.
