Opened my new bottle of CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser and knew instantly. The texture was wrong.
The real issue? They swapped the old, creamy lather for something thinner — and my dry winter skin felt the difference immediately.
The $16 drugstore staple. The claim was still “non-foaming” and “hydrating,” but the formula code on the back? Different.
New Texture
Feels more like a light lotion than a creamy gel.
Cleansing Power
Still removes sunscreen and daily grime — but zero residue.
Post-Wash Feel
No tightness. But also less of that protected-film feeling.

They kept the big three ceramides and hyaluronic acid. The real change is in the base — they removed some fatty alcohols that gave it that rich slip.
- Ceramides 1, 3, 6-II: Still there to support your skin barrier.
- Hyaluronic Acid: For surface-level hydration.
- Glycerin: The workhorse humectant, bumped up in the list.
- Polyglyceryl-4 Laurate/Sebacate: The new-ish emulsifier — makes it feel lighter.
It spreads easier — almost watery. Washes off in a flash, leaves skin soft but not as “cushioned.”
After two weeks, my skin was fine. Not better, not worse. The surprise? I missed the old formula’s slight richness on nights I used retinol.
My barrier stayed intact. No new breakouts. But it’s a maintenance player now, not a repair one.
It’s still a good, no-frills cleanser. But the magic’s dialed back — they fixed what wasn’t broken.
