Bakuchiol is the one retinol alternative that isn’t just marketing fluff. The science is legit.
It binds to the same receptors as retinol — but doesn’t turn your face into a peeling, sensitive mess. You get the signal without the scream.
This is the Bakuchiol Smoothing Serum from Herbivore Botanicals. $58. I tried it because I needed a night treatment that wouldn’t wreck my skin barrier.
Texture
A true serum — not a gel-cream hybrid.
Scent
Light, earthy, herbal. Not perfumed.
Packaging
Glass bottle with a dropper. Feels substantial.

It’s not just bakuchiol floating in water. The base is squalane and tamanu oil — so it’s hydrating at its core. The ingredient list is short, which I like.
- Bakuchiol: mimics retinol’s collagen-boosting action
- Squalane: hydration that mimics skin’s own oils
- Tamanu Oil: calms and soothes inflammation
- Willowherb: antioxidant, reduces redness
Golden, slightly oily drop. Absorbs in about 90 seconds — leaves a satin finish, not a slick. Skin feels plump instantly.
By week two, zero irritation. That’s the win. But I had to use a separate exfoliant — this doesn’t provide that instant surface sloughing retinol does.
My fine lines look softer. Pore appearance improved. But for deep wrinkles or serious texture? You might miss retinol’s aggressive edge.
It does what it promises. A gentle, effective alternative for people who can’t or won’t use retinol. It’s a great nightly workhorse.
