Everyone’s obsessed with Saie‘s Clean Screen. It’s all over my feed.
But ‘reef-safe’ is a marketing term — not a legal one. So I checked the actual science.
A $38 mineral SPF 30. The claim that hooked me? “100% reef-safe.” That’s a big promise.
Non-Nano Zinc
The mineral particles are supposedly too big to harm coral.
No Oxybenzone/Octinoxate
Skips the two most infamous chemical filters banned in Hawaii.
Water-Resistant
For 40 minutes. Basically, just long enough to sweat it off.

It’s a simple zinc oxide formula. That’s the reef-friendly part. But ‘clean’ beauty loves filler oils.
My unexpected note? The raspberry seed oil smells nice but does zero for sun protection.
- Zinc Oxide 14.5%: The only active, blocks UVA/UVB
- Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride: Coconut-derived emollient — feels light
- Raspberry Seed Oil: Antioxidant, but mostly for scent/marketing
- Squalane: Hydration that doesn’t feel heavy

Texture is a thick cream. Spreads like peanut butter — not the drippy kind. The dry-down is shockingly matte.
After two weeks? The matte finish started to pill over my morning serum. A real mood-killer.

No new sunspots. That’s a win. But the white cast on my medium skin? Noticeable for a good 5 minutes.

Is it reef-safe? By current standards, yes. Is it a perfect sunscreen? Not even close.
