Okay, I caved and bought the Grown Alchemist Detox Cleanser because the packaging is basically beige-chic therapy. But then I flipped the bottle over and felt like I was reading a chemistry exam.
It calls itself “clean,” but the third ingredient is a known penetration enhancer. That’s not necessarily evil, but it’s definitely not the “gentle botanical” story they’re selling.
It’s $49 for 200ml. The claim that hooked me: “detoxifies and purifies” without stripping. Sounds like a dream until you realize your skin isn’t a colon — it doesn’t need a detox.
The Pump
Dispenses a perfect pearl-sized blob, but the nozzle spits if you pump too fast. Annoying at 7am.
The Lather
It doesn’t foam. It turns into a milky, slippery film that feels like washing your face with lotion.
The Scent
Smells like a $200 spa treatment — think crushed herbs and citrus. Fancy, but fleeting.

Here’s the rub: the “detox” comes from Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract — basically fruit acid that gently exfoliates. But the base is heavy on Coco-Glucoside and a fatty acid cocktail that leaves a film.
It’s not a bad formula, but it’s a rich cream cleanser pretending to be a clarifying gel.
- Apple Fruit Extract: Mild enzyme exfoliant, not a deep detox
- Coco-Glucoside: Gentle surfactant, but leaves residue
- Gluconolactone: A PHA that softly smooths, very slow
- Sodium Phytate: Synthetic chelator, the ‘clean’ catch-all

First wash: it feels like massaging cold cream into my face. Rinsing takes 30 seconds longer than my usual gel cleanser because it leaves a slick, almost waxy shield behind.
By week two, my dry patches were gone, but my pores looked… exactly the same. The “detox” is really just hydration with a side of gentle exfoliation.

Measurable change: my skin felt softer and looked bouncier. Unchanged: blackheads on my nose are still residents. This is a hydrating cleanser, not a pore vacuum.

It’s not a scam, but it’s a mislabel. If you buy it expecting a deep clean, you’ll be confused. If you buy it for a rich, comfortable wash, you’ll be happy.
