So Haruharu Wonder quietly reformulated the Black Rice Toner that 2 million people bought — and nobody screamed about it. The old version had a short, ferulic acid-heavy list. The new one? Totally different texture and a longer ingredient deck.
I only caught it because the bottle felt lighter in my hand. That’s it. That’s the tell — they changed the plastic, too.
It’s still a milky hydrating toner, about $22 for 150ml. The claim is “7,000ppm black rice extract” — but they don’t tell you *which* extract changed.
New Base Gel
Swapped from a watery, thin consistency to a slippery, almost serum-like slip.
Scent Shift
Old version smelled faintly of grain. This one has a mild, clean cosmetic smell — no fragrance added, just different raw materials.
Pump vs. Pour
Bottle now has a narrower opening. You’ll pour less, which is good, because the formula is thicker.

They dropped ferulic acid entirely and boosted the panthenol and madecassoside. That’s a move toward barrier repair, away from antioxidant glow. The black rice is still there, but it’s lower on the list — the star is now the humectant blend.
- Panthenol: Soothes redness fast
- Madecassoside: Calms angry, tight skin
- Hyaluronic Acid: Sits on top, holds water
- Beta-Glucan: Thicker, more cushiony hydration

It lands like a thin lotion, not a toner. Absorbs in about 20 seconds, leaving a slightly tacky film that disappears after moisturizer. I actually liked the old watery feel more — this feels heavier on my combo skin.
Week two: my cheeks stopped flaking. That’s new. The old version never did that for me, even though it was more popular.

My T-zone still gets oily by 3pm — that hasn’t changed. But the dry patches around my nose are gone, and my skin looks bouncier, not dewy-glowy. It’s a hydration upgrade, not a brightness fix.

It’s a better formula for dry skin, a worse one for oily types. I’d repurchase in winter, but I’m not mad about the swap.
