My forehead was a beacon by lunch. A literal reflective surface.
Powder just caked on top of the oil. This was about finding a base layer that actually stopped the slick at the source.
Effaclar Mat from La Roche-Posay. About $35. They promised a “mattifying moisturizer” which felt like a lie I needed to test.

It’s not magic, it’s silica and acids. The silica soaks up oil instantly. The acids work over time to keep pores clear.
- Silica: Immediate oil blotter, like microscopic sponges
- LHA & Salicylic Acid: Gentle chemical exfoliation to unclog
- Glycerin: A hint of hydration so it doesn’t feel like desert
- Zinc PCA: Helps regulate sebum production long-term

Surprise: it’s not moisturizing enough on its own. My cheeks felt tight. Had to layer a hydrating serum underneath.
My shine was pushed to 4 PM. A win. But it’s a manager, not a cure—pores looked slightly less crater-like, but didn’t vanish.
It does one job exceptionally well. For that, it earns a spot in the arsenal.
