Lanolips just killed the goose that laid the golden egg. They swapped out their hero ingredient — actual, medicinal-grade lanolin — for a vegan plant blend.
Fans are fuming because the original was the only thing that fixed their cracked winter heels and chapped lips in one swipe. Now it’s a completely different balm wearing the same dress.
It’s the 101 Ointment Multi-Balm SPF 15 — $17.90 for 0.5 oz. They claim it’s just as moisturizing but now “vegan-friendly” with broad spectrum protection.
SPF 15 via Zinc Oxide
Sits on top of skin — doesn’t absorb, just reflects. Leaves a faint white cast if you over-apply.
Vegan Oil Blend
Shea butter + jojoba + sunflower replace the lanolin. Thinner. Less sticky. More… lotion-y.

Same iconic yellow packaging, but the formula pours out faster now. You’ll accidentally waste a pea-sized blob.

No lanolin. No beeswax. No animal anything. The hero is now a trinity of plant oils — and honestly, they’re fine, but they’re not magic. The SPF comes from non-nano zinc, which is the least irritating sunscreen for face balms.
- Shea Butter: Deep moisture that sits on top, doesn’t penetrate
- Jojoba Oil: Closest mimic to skin’s natural sebum — absorbs fast
- Sunflower Seed Oil: Lightweight barrier, good for reactive skin
- Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano): Physical SPF, no chemical burn

Scoop a blob — it’s thinner than the original. More like a melted butter than a thick balm. Rubs in clear in about 8 seconds, but leaves a slight slick that takes a minute to settle.
Week 2: My lips felt less occluded — like the moisture wasn’t locked in as long. I had to reapply after coffee. Surprise win: It’s amazing on cuticles. Heals hangnails in one overnight application.

My dry patches stayed hydrated for about 4 hours vs. the original’s 6-7. My lips didn’t crack, but they also didn’t feel “sealed.” It’s a good everyday balm — not a rescue treatment.

The new formula is fine. It’s a decent SPF balm for your bag. But it’s not the iconic lanolin bomb that made people hoard tubes. They fixed something that wasn’t broken.
