Is Planta Beauty’s Niacinamide Serum Clean or Greenwashed?

Greenwashing Check
They call it ‘farm-to-face,’ but their own ingredient label tells a different story.
Expert Analysis · Honest Reviews · Real Results
1.🌱Farm-to-Face My Ass

Planta Beauty calls this serum “farm-to-face,” which is a great slogan if you ignore the fact that the ingredient label reads like a chemistry textbook written by a lab in New Jersey.

I bought it because I’m a sucker for anything that promises “clean” skincare without the $80 price tag. Then I read the label — and the “farm” part gets real fuzzy, real fast.

2.🧪The 10% Problem

It’s $24 for 30ml. The claim: 10% niacinamide + 1% zinc to nuke oil and shrink pores. The reality: 10% is a lot — like, a lot a lot — for anyone who isn’t a seasoned acid user.

1

Texture

Watery, thin, sinks in fast — no sticky film left behind.

2

Fragrance

Zero. Smells like nothing. Thank god.

3

Packaging

Glass dropper. Feels expensive, but the dropper pulls up too much product — you’ll waste a third of it.

3.🔬What’s Actually Inside

Here’s where the “farm” narrative gets shaky. It’s got the niacinamide and zinc, sure, but the base is mostly propanediol and pentylene glycol — synthetic humectants that work fine but aren’t exactly “picked at dawn.” The hero ingredient is still the niacinamide, which genuinely regulates sebum and brightens dark spots. The zinc is there to calm inflammation, but at 1%, it’s barely a whisper.

  • Niacinamide 10%: Controls oil, fades post-acne marks — the real workhorse
  • Zinc PCA 1%: Soothes redness, but at this dose it’s more placebo than power
  • Propanediol: Moisture magnet, but it’s a lab-derived solvent, not a plant
  • Allantoin: Softens skin, takes the edge off the high niacinamide concentration

4.🫠The Pilling Is Real

First application: it glides on like a light lotion, absorbs in 15 seconds, and leaves zero residue. Feels clean. Then I put moisturizer on top — and it pilled. Like little white eraser shavings all over my jawline.

By week two, the oil on my T-zone was noticeably less at 3pm. But the pilling never stopped unless I waited a full five minutes before layering. That’s annoying, but it works — so I adapted.

💡

One Thing: Use it only at night, and don’t put anything on top for five full minutes. Or mix one drop into your moisturizer — kills the pilling entirely.

5.⚖️The Verdict Cards

After four weeks: my pores look tighter around my nose, and my forehead is less shiny by lunch. My dark spots? Still there, but lighter — like someone turned the contrast down 20%. No irritation, but I also didn’t push it past every-other-day.

Buy if
You’re oily-combo, want to control shine, and don’t mind waiting between layers.
⏭️

Skip if
You have dry skin or use retinoids — this will peel you like a snake.
💰

Worth it?
For $24, yes — but it’s not “farm-to-face.” It’s “factory-to-face” with good marketing.

6.📞Final Call

It’s a solid niacinamide serum with a greenwashing problem. The ingredients work — but the story they’re telling about them is mostly fiction.

7.2/10
Effective but overhyped — clean label, dirty marketing
🛍️

Where to Buy: Get it on Amazon or directly from Planta’s site — but buy the travel size first to test pilling before committing.
