Every dermatologist on my feed swears by Prequel‘s Gleanser. But “gentle” usually means “boring.” I had to check if the hype was just expensive water.
Here’s the thing — it’s a gel that foams. In the year of our lord 2024, that combo usually strips your face like a chemical peel. The fact that it hasn’t destroyed my barrier is genuinely weird.
It’s $18 for 16.9 oz. That’s drugstore pricing with clinical branding. The claim: clean, fragrance-free, and strong enough to remove sunscreen without a double cleanse.
Glycerin Base
Not water-first. This is why it doesn’t foam like dish soap.
5% Niacinamide
Actually enough to calm redness, not just a label flex.
No Sulfates
Uses sodium cocoyl glutamate instead. Sounds scary, cleans without the squeak.

Here’s where I got annoyed. It has phenoxyethanol — a preservative. “Clean” brands pretend that’s poison. It’s not. It’s the reason you don’t grow mold on your face.
Also, the “fragrance-free” claim is true. It smells like nothing. Weirdly, I found that reassuring.
- Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate: Plant-derived surfactant that actually cleans
- Glycerin: The humectant doing all the heavy lifting
- Niacinamide: Anti-redness at a real percentage
- Phenoxyethanol: The ‘dirty’ preservative that keeps you safe

First pump: it’s a clear gel that feels like aloe vera. Zero slip. I panicked — thought I’d need a gallon to wash my face. Nope. One pump lathers into a soft, milky foam that rinses clean in seconds.
Week two: my pores look smaller. Not “Instagram filter” smaller, but my nose isn’t a strawberry anymore. The niacinamide is actually doing something.

My redness dropped maybe 30%. My skin doesn’t feel tight after washing — that’s the glycerin. But if you wear heavy waterproof mascara, you’ll still need an oil cleanser first. This is not a miracle worker.

It’s clean in the way that matters — effective, non-toxic, and honest about its preservatives. I’d rebuy it, and I’m cheap.
