Putting retinol on in the AM is like washing your car before a rainstorm. A total waste—and it might even cause damage.
The real reason? Sunlight deactivates retinol. You’re slathering on an active ingredient just to have it break down before it can work. Worse, it makes your fresh skin cells more vulnerable to UV rays. You’re paying for protection and getting the opposite.
It’s The Ordinary Retinol 0.5% in Squalane. $7.90. I tried it because the claim is pure function: stabilized retinol, no fuss.
0.5% Retinol
A mid-strength concentration—enough to work without melting your face off.
In Squalane
Suspended in a plant-derived oil that mimics your skin’s own moisture.
Airless Packaging
A pump bottle that keeps the retinol from oxidizing on your shelf. Smart.

It’s a short, focused list. The retinol is the star—it speeds up cell turnover. The squalane is the supporting actor, preventing the classic retinol dryness and flaking.
- Retinol: Increases cell renewal, tackles texture and fine lines
- Squalane: A hydrating emollient that’s non-comedogenic
- Coconut Alkanes: A lightweight solvent for the formula
- Hydrogenated Polyisobutene: Gives the oil a silky, non-greasy slip

It’s a clear, light oil. Absorbs in about 90 seconds—leaves a slight, satiny film, not a greasy one. Smells like… nothing. Just faintly chemical.
Week 2, the purge was real. A few tiny, under-the-surface bumps came up. But by week 3, they were gone and my skin felt smoother to the touch. The squalane meant zero dryness, which was a shock.

After 6 weeks, my pores look less clogged. My foundation sits smoother. No miracle on deep lines—but my skin texture is legitimately improved. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

This is the workhorse retinol. It’s effective, cheap, and boring in the best way. Use it at night. Always.
